Product Description

The Netherlands stands out in many ways, and this certainly applies to its railway system, especially when viewed from neighboring Germany. The Dutch railways placed great emphasis early on developing their own locomotive and passenger car designs, many of which gained international attention for their unusual and innovative appearance. When the Dutch State Railways (NS) set out to modernize its intercity services in the 1970s, it collaborated with the German manufacturer Talbot to develop a distinctive powered railcar train. The resulting design featured raised panorama cabs positioned above the gangway connections between units. This gave the new train type—designated ICM by NS—its bold, commanding look. Because passengers could walk from one unit to the next through the elevated end sections, the trains quickly earned the nickname “Koploper” (“head-runner” or “front walker”). A total of 144 Koploper units were built, and they soon became a defining element of modern intercity travel in the Netherlands. When Amsterdam Schiphol Airport was connected to the national railway network in 1986, NS painted two ICM sets in the colors of the country’s major airlines. ICM 4011 received the blue-and-white livery of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, its powerful nose shape reminiscent of a jumbo jet. ICM 4012 was painted in the white-and-red colors of Martinair, turning heads across the country as a sleek “jetliner on rails.” Prototype: Dutch State Railways (NS) class ICM-1 three-part Koploper Intercity electric rail car train.
