Railjet: ÖBB’s Flagship Electric Locomotive for High-Speed Rail

The rapid modernisation of Austria’s electric locomotive fleet began with the introduction of the first Class 1016 “Taurus” locomotive in the summer of 1999. A dual-system version of this universal locomotive was also procured for operation under 15 kV/16.7 Hz and 25 kV/50 Hz AC systems. By 2006, a total of 282 Class 1116 locomotives had entered service. They are approved for speeds of up to 230 km/h and have an output of 6,400 kW.

The Railjet is an important part of European long-distance rail travel, connecting not only major cities in Austria but also international destinations. Locomotives 1116 201–251 were adapted by Siemens in Munich for Railjet services, which were introduced in December 2008. Locomotive 1116 238 received the required equipment in May 2011.

Model: The model is equipped with an NEM coupling pocket. A coupling adapter is included for use with Railjet models that are factory-fitted with an electric coupling.
